A UWE (University of the West of England) project; creating
an ABC Primer (a tool often used to teach children their ABC’s i.e. A for
Apple).
I decided to focus the basis of the ABC primer on the subject of ‘A
Night Out’. Using a mind map and mood boards, I developed 26 alphabet-based
designs, each built around a character, phrase, and image. The style was shaped
by a vibrant colour palette (red, green, purple and cream) and two contrasting
typefaces: Body Grotesque Large and Coco Gothic Light Italic. Each square
followed a set format with loose, chaotic backdrops—explosions, splashes,
patterns—to reflect the unpredictability of nightlife. The images were mostly
shot over the summer on nights out with my digital camera, with a few sourced
as stock. Designs were built in Photoshop, repeated across the full alphabet. A
project that allowed me to combine photography, colour, and type
expressively—though I’d rework some errors and turn it into a booklet if I did
it again.
