A UWE (University of the West of England) project;
investigating a chosen protest song (from a list of 50) and then creating 3
outcomes to investigate and visualise knowledge gained.
My decision was to
focus on the song ‘The Message’ (Grandmaster Flash) and the destruction of the
Bronx (as well as the individuals residing there) during the 1970/80s. I
focused a lot documenting the vast rubble that the Bronx had become due to a
string of fires, encourages through wilful neglect by the government of NYC.
Style was influenced by ‘Subway Art’ (M. Cooper & H. Chalfant, 2009),
‘Radical Album Cover Art – Sampler 3’ (Intro, 2003) and ‘The Graphic Language
of Neville Brody’ (N. Brody, 1988). Aimed at hip-hop and history enthusiasts as
well as general Grandmaster Flash fans. Outcome was 2 B1 posters, 1 12” vinyl
sleeve and 1 brick sized publication. I gained knowledge about photo treatment,
colour palette and large format outcomes.
